Artist stringers who exhibit at and report on shows
for the magazine without revealing their identities
to event organizers.
August 28-29, Seawall Art Show, Portsmouth. Contact:
Portsmouth Museum and Fine Arts Commission,
Jean Shackelford, 420 High Street, Portsmouth, VA
23704. Web site: www.seawallartshow.org. Application
fee: $25. Space fee: $135. Space size: 10x10. 100%
outdoor. Exhibitors: 90. Attendance: 25,000 (staff estimate
for 2003).
This is one of the best-run shows we do all year. The
organizing committee and all the volunteers spoil the
artists rotten. They provide breakfast and all the cold
water we can drink (all day) both days and even have
an artists' reception with a barbeque on Saturday night.
The buying public is art savvy, and most come to buy
and not just kick tires. Sales start early and usually
last all day long, even in 90-degree heat. It's a very
pleasant show to do.
I rate my enjoyment of the show a ten, along with
judging, organization, quality, director cooperation
and artist treatment. Attendance, like the weather,
was about an eight. I rate my sales ($3,100/$130)
at the 34th annual show a ten.
